Maggie Sonenshine- Exemplary Service

Hope Dorman
HDS eighth grader Maggie Sonenshine takes the character pillars of Caring and Citizenship to heart. While some students find it challenging to complete their eighth grade service learning hours, Maggie logs much more than the required 15 hours. Maggie has been involved with the program Human Options since before she can remember. Human Options is an organization in Irvine that serves victims of domestic violence. Their mission states, “Human Options provides safe haven and life changing programs to help abused women, their children and families rebuild their lives – and works with the community to break the cycle of domestic violence.”

Maggie began giving back to the program at the young age of 2 by donating some of her birthday presents to children in need, and donated proceeds from lemonade stand sales as she got older. This isn’t something Maggie has done on her own. She joins her entire family, including her grandparents Sheila and Ygal Sonenshine, in supporting the organization. She is trained to work in the children’s program and assists in classes for toddlers and young children. Maggie benefitted the children even more during Halloween time when she hosted a Halloween costume drive at Harbor Day which allowed for children who may not get a chance to celebrate Halloween to truly enjoy it. Thanks to the students and families who donated, the drive was such a success that her younger sister, Sarah, will host it next school year when Maggie has graduated.

Maggie uses her art skills that she gained here at Harbor Day at Human Options. She especially likes volunteering for their therapeutic art program called “A Window Between Worlds”. She says, “it’s really cool to be part of working with the kids and helping them.” This experience has greatly impacted her, and she has learned that “it’s really important to educate about domestic violence and for people to know there are places like Human Options which can help.” After she graduates from Harbor Day, she plans to continue her work at Human Options when she can. We are proud to have students like Maggie who use their talents and skills learned here for such important causes.
