Singing Sensation Anika Nielsen

Performing can be scary, but some people find being on stage exhilarating. One such performer is our talented recent graduate of the class of 2016, Anika Nielsen, who has just come in second place in her division at the Professional Opera Singers Association competition in June. This is especially remarkable because the judges included professional opera singers and it was only Anika’s second opera competition! However, singing is nothing new to Anika. She started singing early on and began lessons at age six, mostly singing pop pieces. When meeting the faculty at her future high school, Sage Hill School, the art director noticed her talent and recommended a new vocal teacher. This new teacher helped Anika start singing opera only a few months ago.

Anika notes that her favorite part of singing is the feeling she gets. She says that when she is on stage, “I just feel so alive and I really love to sing.” Despite her newfound skill, she still faces some challenges. She is a soprano, so hitting the lower notes can be a challenge for her, and memorization and mastery a new piece of music quickly is another difficult aspect. She notes that one day, she thinks it would be cool to sing professionally. Throughout her years performing, she has learned an important lesson for all performers, which is to trust the guidance of the teacher. To anyone wanting to perform, she advises, “have an open mind. The teacher might be strict and you might not know what they are going to say to you, but they always know what they’re doing so just listen to them.” We wish the best of luck to Anika as she continues her singing, maybe one day even turning it into a career!
