JoyJars - Lexi and Zoe Stern
Lexi and Zoe Stern put smiles on many faces and learned the importance of giving back to the community through their JoyJar project. The Jessie Rees Foundation sends jars of toys, JoyJars, to children with cancer to “ensure every kid fighting cancer has the support to Never Ever Give Up!”
Seeing both of their parents involved in charitable work inspired Lexi and Zoe to serve others also. Their mom told the girls about the Jessie Rees foundation and the girls teamed up with their dad to support the cause. During one night of service, Lexi, Zoe, their dad, and some nurses from his work assembled several hundred jars.
Beyond assembling the jars, the girls wanted to get students at Harbor Day involved and aware by hosting a bake sale. Zoe said, “All of the proceeds from the brownies gave us more money for more JoyJars to be made,” and Lexi agreed that the money from the sale allowed them to fill more jars. To others who want to begin a community service project, Lexi advises, “just be passionate about what you want to do, help as much as you can, and have fun with it.” When reflecting on what they learned from their community service project, Zoe said sometimes giving can be better than getting because of the big difference it makes to kids fighting cancer. Lexi noted that it felt great to do something kind for someone else. Lexi and Zoe taught us about JoyJars and about the joy of serving.
