Arts

Harbor Day School is as much devoted to dreams as it is to facts. The solid academic core is balanced by exposure to many opportunities for self-expression and the appreciation of the arts. Classes in studio art, music, and woodworking are taught by specialists in these fields.

In the art studio, children explore various media, experiment with techniques, study world art history, become familiar with the styles of various artists, and develop an understanding of the principles and elements of art. The lower school art curriculum includes drawing, painting, papermaking, reprousse, three-dimensional construction, clay, murals, tempera batik, weaving, collage, and printmaking. The upper school curriculum adds color theory, sculpture, graphic design, Photoshop, and the use of the potter's wheel. Both programs are enhanced by visiting artists, museum excursions, and by utilizing the surrounding community environment. Artwork is displayed throughout the school and in the community through local art shows.

Children at Harbor Day School work with two music specialists. The music curriculum at all grade levels includes individual and group performance, correct vocal techniques, appropriate audience behavior, and the appreciation of major works, composers, and styles of music. Music appreciation is enhanced by many in-house concerts, musical presentations, and drama groups. Many performance opportunities are available throughout the school year for children at all grade levels.
