Admissions

Applying to Harbor Day

Thank you for your interest in Harbor Day School. We hope that you come and visit our school and learn what makes Harbor Day so special.

Harbor Day School seeks students who are intellectually capable, who show an enthusiasm for learning, and who exhibit character that would contribute to the well being of the school community.

Harbor Day School will accept qualified students without regard to race, creed, color, religion, or national origin in any grade where vacancies are available.

All applicants take entrance exams to determine their academic aptitude and their ability to do work comparable to that of children in the same grade in an independent-school population. Admission to Harbor Day School is partly based on an evaluation of the applicant's performance on entrance tests. Other factors depending on grade level may include: report cards from the past two academic years, a teacher recommendation form, and a half-day classroom visit. Qualified siblings of Harbor Day School students will receive priority acceptance, with the understanding that Harbor Day School may not be the appropriate school for all sibling applicants. Families who leave Harbor Day School for reasons other than graduation will not receive sibling priority. Children of alumni are given preference over non-sibling applicants when all other factors are equal.

  • STEP 1: SCHEDULE A VISIT

Our annual Community Open House is on Saturday, November 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The entire family is welcome to attend this event to explore Harbor Day School. Please RSVP by clicking here.

Tours are available for prospective candidates for the 2020-2021 school year by appointment. To schedule a tour, please complete an inquiry form.
  • STEP 2: SUBMIT AN APPLICATION

An online application for the 2020-2021 school year may be submitted as of September 9, 2019 (the year prior to admission). No applications will be processed earlier than one year prior to the entrance year. We request that all applications for grades kindergarten through eight be submitted by January 17, 2020. There is a non-refundable application fee of $100.00 payable online at the time the application is submitted.
  • STEP 3: ASSESSMENT

    KINDERGARTEN PROCESS
Kindergarten applicants must be five years old on or before September 1 of the year the child is enrolled. A Kindergarten screening is required for all applicants. The screening fee is $150.00. Children will be assigned screening dates by the school, and will be notified of the screening date by January 24, 2020. Parent requests for a specific screening date will be considered. The screening for Harbor Day School siblings takes place on February 7, 2020. All other applicants will be screened on February 8, 14, or 15, 2020. The required Teacher Recommendation Form must be submitted by the applicant’s current teacher by January 17, 2020.

    GRADES ONE THROUGH FOUR PROCESS
First through fourth grade applicants are required to take an admission test offered at Harbor Day School on Saturday, February 1, 2020. The test fee is $150.00. The test will include reading, math, and writing assessments. All applicants will be notified of their admission status in early March. When testing is complete, a copy of the applicant's most recent report card and a Teacher Recommendation Form may be requested. If an opening occurs, the entire list of qualified candidates will be reviewed, and a select group of candidates may be requested to spend a half-day at Harbor Day School.

    GRADES FIVE THROUGH EIGHT PROCESS

Fifth through eighth grade applicants are required to submit their previous year and most recent report card with their application. Fifth through eighth grade applicants are required to take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) by February 8, 2020, and must register online at www.iseetest.org. Please list Harbor Day School as a score recipient. Our school code number is 054016. The ISEE will be offered at Harbor Day School on Saturday, February 8, 2020, but you may register to take the ISEE at another test site. The test will include verbal and quantitative aptitude measures, as well as reading, math, and writing assessments.

For sixth grade applicants, a Teacher Recommendation form completed by the applicant’s current English and math teachers must be received by January 17, 2020. Upon review of all sixth grade applicants by the admissions committee, sixth grade applicants who appear to be qualified will be invited to participate in a classroom visit between January 8 and February 14, 2020. For fifth, seventh and eighth grade applicants, if an opening occurs, the entire list of qualified candidates will be reviewed, and a select group of candidates may be requested to spend a half-day at Harbor Day School and submit the required teacher recommendation forms.
  • STEP 4: DECISIONS

Decisions are posted online in early March.
