Finding Community Through Involvement at Harbor Day

The Spotlight

Finding Community Through Involvement at Harbor Day
Kristen Gooding, Parent Council President

Five years ago, I was sitting at Kindergarten Orientation, excited but slightly overwhelmed about the journey ahead. As I listened to faculty and Parent Council members talk about their roles in fostering a strong school community, I remember thinking, That sounds wonderful… for someone else.

I was a working mom with a younger child still at home, and the idea of adding another commitment felt impossible. But I started small—helping with a class holiday party, signing up as a mystery reader, and volunteering for a monthly hot lunch shift. What I discovered through these small moments was that being involved at Harbor Day didn’t feel like an obligation—it became something I truly enjoyed.

Volunteering gave me the chance to build meaningful relationships with faculty, feel engaged in my children’s education, and form lasting friendships with other parents. It didn’t drain my time or energy—it filled my bucket. And that’s what ultimately led me to where I am today as Parent Council President.

As we look ahead to the 2025-26 school year, I encourage all parents—moms and dads alike—to find ways to get involved. Whether it’s helping in the classroom, serving hot lunch, or chairing an event, there are so many ways to participate, no matter your schedule. Parent Council nominations for next year are now open!

Thank you for being a part of this wonderful community. I look forward to seeing many of you step into new volunteer roles next year!
