National PE and Sports Week: Building Skills, Moving and Teamwork

The Spotlight

National PE and Sports Week: Building Skills, Moving and Teamwork
Jo Pickard, PE Teacher, Coach, and Department Chair

May is the nationwide celebration of National Physical Education and Sports Week, which is a time to recognize how movement, play, and teamwork shape our students growth. The week also kicks off National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, making it the perfect opportunity to celebrate all the ways our students stay active and healthy.

In PE class, students aren’t just running laps or playing games—they’re building skills for life. From learning how to dribble a basketball or throw a football to practicing balance, coordination, and teamwork, these activities help develop confidence and essential motor skills. Just as important, they’re also learning how to support each other, show good sportsmanship, and celebrate both effort and achievement.

Of course, PE is also about fun! Whether it’s playing a fun game of pickleball, shooting the soccer ball at the goal, throwing up the parachute like a mushroom, racing through a relay with friends, or sharing a high-five after a strong effort, these moments help students connect with one another. Along the way, they’re practicing respect, fairness, resilience, and grit. These are values that will carry far beyond the gym or playing field.

To close out the month, we look forward to one of our most exciting traditions—the annual Blue-Gold Track Meet Competition. This friendly and commpetitve rivalry gives students the chance to showcase their talents in events such as sprints, hurdles, long jump, high jump, distance running, and more. The energy is contagious as students cheer on their teammates, strive for their personal best, and celebrate each other’s accomplishments. It’s a tradition that blends school spirit with healthy competition and is always a favorite among students, staff, and families.

National PE and Sports Week is a wonderful reminder that staying active is not only good for our bodies but also for our minds and hearts. We are proud to see our students learning, moving, and growing together. We’re especially excited to finish the month strong with the Blue-Gold Track Meet!
