Tips and Tricks for Success in Middle School

Tips and Tricks for Success in Middle School

One of the biggest adjustments students make at Harbor Day is transitioning from Lower School to Middle School. Learning to manage changing classes and keeping track of various materials and assignments can be a challenge, especially during the adjustment period at the beginning of the year. Although there are no shortcuts or magic tricks to developing strong organizational skills, below is a list of tips and tricks to be well on your way to success.

  • Bring your binder home every night. Even if you do not think you need it for homework, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
  • Utilize the binder rings and make sure to hole punch your papers. When you get a handout or assignment from a teacher, place it directly in the binder rings, behind the appropriate class divider tab.
  • Write down your assignments during class. While the portal is a great way to double-check your nightly assignments, it should not be solely relied upon. Students are held responsible for the assignments discussed in class, and writing them down immediately when you learn about them will help you stay on top of your work.
  • When packing up your backpack at the end of the school day, glance at your planner to ensure you bring all necessary materials home.
  • When you sit down to start your homework, start with your hardest subject first. This will help you get that assignment taken care of when you are feeling your freshest.
  • Before going to bed, pack your backpack and all of your supplies. It is very easy to forget something when you are rushing around in the morning.
  • Most importantly, remember that your teachers are always there to help you out. Don’t be afraid to email them and ask for extra help if you have questions.

I hope that by following these suggestions, everyone has the best year possible!
