The Value of Middle School Clubs

The Value of Middle School Clubs

Middle school is a time of growth when students discover their interests, gain independence, and develop friendships. One of the opportunities for exploring interests and connecting with peers is through participation in school clubs. While clubs have evolved over time, their core benefits remain invaluable during this formative period in students' lives.

Clubs meet during lunch or recess on different days, allowing students to select activities that interest them most. Many students participate in multiple clubs to make the most of these enriching opportunities. On any given day, you might spot the Kindness Club crafting heartfelt notes to brighten someone's day, while the 8th Grade Book Club engages in lively discussions about their latest mystery novel. There's truly something for everyone!

Our Current Clubs

8th Grade Book Club – Hosted by Mrs. Stockstill, Mrs. Meyer, and Mr. Arkin, this club was founded in 2015 by alumna Maggie Sonenshine. Student interests drive the literature choices. Last year's class, passionate about classics, read "The Scarlet Letter," "Pride and Prejudice," and "Almond." This year's group, drawn to mysteries and romantic comedies, has enjoyed "Break to You," "Stars and Smoke," and "What I Carry." The group meets weekly, with members taking turns bringing snacks.

Chess Club – Founded by a former HDS student, this club initially focused on chess competitions. The popularity of "The Queen's Gambit" inspired renewed interest, with many students playing chess on their iPads. Now evolved into a casual gathering, the club offers a welcoming space for students to play chess and socialize during lunch. Mr. Gapp is the lead faculty advisor for this club.

Kindness Club – Led by 7th and 8th-grade students and Ms. Phan, this club empowers members to spread kindness throughout the school community. As "Agents of Kindness," students deliver thoughtful gestures such as encouraging notes with treats, appreciation cards for teachers, and mentorship to younger students. They also organize larger events, including a middle school-wide scavenger hunt and a March Madness gratitude bracket.

Latin Club (Junior Classical League) – One of the largest academic organizations for middle and high school students in the United States, JCL promotes understanding and enthusiasm for Classical antiquity (language, history, and culture) on our modern civilization. Magistra Paff and her students explore language, history, and culture while participating in competitions at school, regional, and state levels.

Mandarin Club – This vibrant club, led by Wang Laoshi immerses students in Chinese language and culture through engaging activities. Members enjoy traditional and modern Mandarin songs, sample Asian snacks, celebrate holidays, create crafts, play traditional games, and learn about Chinese history and poetry in an interactive environment.

Math Club – Meeting weekly on Monday mornings during recess with Mrs. Stockstill, students enjoy snacks while solving puzzles, learning mental math techniques, and competing for the "World's Greatest Student" statue. Due to its popularity, the club alternates weeks between grades 5-6 and 7-8. At Harbor Day, math is cool!

Music Club – Led by music teacher Mrs. Leon, this club brings 7th and 8th-grade students together during lunch for musical activities. Students watch musicals, play games like "Name That Tune" or "Songnario," and enjoy karaoke in a relaxed setting.

Poetry Club – This newer addition, led by English teacher Ms. Walkow, welcomes Middle School students during Thursday lunch recess. Participants learn and recite both classic and contemporary poetry, bringing verses to life with theatrical enthusiasm.

Student Council – Led by Mr. Grogan, this organization offers students opportunities to develop leadership skills, manage responsibilities, and serve their fellow classmates while making a positive impact on their school.

Student Quotes

"I love going to Poetry Club because it is fun to read poems with friends. My favorite poem so far has been 'Dreams' by Langston Hughes because of the literary devices that are used." -Aubrey L. (Grade 8)

"I love being in Kindness Club because I get to have fun with my friends while spreading positivity throughout HDS. Even through small acts of kindness, like putting candy and notes in peoples' lockers, we can make someone's day a little better, which is what Kindness Club is all about!" – Leela T. (Grade 8)

"Student Council is an incredible program at Harbor Day School. We help plan morning meetings, events, and spirit weeks. Even though I’ve only been a part of the Student Council for one year, I’ve enjoyed it so much. Everyone gets a chance to share their ideas, and most of our suggestions are either considered or built upon. It’s a place where creativity and teamwork are valued. No one is left out. It truly feels like a welcoming, supportive community. Being a part of student council has made me more confident and excited to contribute to school life." - Callie A. (Grade 8)

"Poetry Club is a relaxing space to spend time with my friends and learn about poems!" -Turner C. (Grade 8)

"My favorite HDS club is Kindness Club. It always gives me something to look forward to during the week. It allows me to give back to our community in the tiniest ways like putting candies in people's lockers or gifting presents for our hardworking teachers." -Sierra T. (Grade 7)

Middle school clubs are more than just recess activities. Students get to explore new experiences and create closer bonds with classmates. We encourage all students to get involved, pursue their interests, and take full advantage of these opportunities. Middle school is an important time to create community where every student can thrive.
