AppJam+ for the Win!

It was a win for Harbor Day School as team “Footchair Studios” took first place in the AppJam+ Competition at UCI on December 5! Harbor Day middle school students Jack C., Carter K., and Christopher O. with their math app titled, “The Adventures of Ronin,” took an 80’s retro approach to their app. They used “The Legend of Zelda” video game format where the character moves from screen-to-screen into different lands, or in this case, different grades. If you fail, you will be sent back outside the school to repeat the grade. Our HDS students had a great time coding together. They also enjoyed researching different sounds to implement throughout their app. They did find a major bug they encountered right before the event, but luckily their mentor was able to remedy the issue. They are very excited about winning new Chromebooks.

Harbor Day School has been a partner with AppJam+ since 2013. AppJam+ is a stem-based program for elementary-aged students. Gaining critical thinking skills and becoming creative leaders are some of the goals of their program. Each team works with UCI student mentors to help develop an educational app. This is the fourth time that Harbor Day has been awarded at the competition.
