Author Visit with Jerry Pallotta

Sherry Neal
On October 23 author Jerry Pallotta spoke during a school assembly and was a big hit with the students! Mr. Pallotta is famously known for his “Who Would Win” books where he compares animals like Shark versus Killer Whale. He spoke of his very interesting childhood growing up in Massachusetts with 72 cousins and his time spent by the sea, catching all sorts of sea life. His presentation included pictures many things that interest him such as pictures of himself with a whale, Great White Shark, exotic crabs, sea raven, and even a picture of a crab holding his iced coffee!

He went through his writing process with the students and had them comment on how he should re-write one of his stories. He asked students to choose between two different options. For example, he asked students about what is the best description for a plane: “Flying upside down or flying loop the loops? Flying at the crowd or diving at the crowd?" Mr. Pallotta explained to the students how he got his book ideas. Many of his ideas came from going to museums, talking to scientists, and reading many books.

Finally, he brought kids up on stage to ask him questions about his books. Since he is from Boston, someone asked if Tom Brady was his favorite football player. The kids absolutely loved him and definitely could have sat for another hour with him!
