Community Connection - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Moujan Walkow
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Inclusivity and Diversity Committee led this month’s Community Connection assembly with song and inspiration to be the change we want to see in the world. The Community Connection began with an image and quote from Dr. King: “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” Mr. Maki spoke about freedom songs, which were anthems of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and a potent catalyst for change, and showed videos of Imani Uzuri, a Black vocalist and composer who shared her background, knowledge, and talent. Ms. Walkow reached out to members of our school community, who shared some things they would like to see changed, and what they can do, however small, to create the changes they want to see. In Second Grade, Troy C. shared that he would like to see “everyone have equal rights no matter their skin tone, where they live, what language they speak, or what they believe in. They all deserve equal rights, justice, and freedom.” The Community Connection concluded with a song, as Mrs. Webb and Mr. Maki sang “This Little Light of Mine” while the whole school clapped along.
