Chapman Writing Competition Finalist 2021

We are pleased to announce that eighth grade student Daniel L. was a finalist in the 22nd Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest through Chapman University. This year’s theme is Sharing Strength: Sustaining Humanity. Students could submit in the following categories: art, film, poetry, or prose. The entire eighth grade class participated in the contest, as they do each year, and Daniel is the third student from Harbor Day to become a finalist. Thousands of students from across the world compete, and Chapman chose only five students in each category as finalists.
Daniel’s video titled "Prayers from Mommy and Daddy" detailed the Holocaust survival story of Helen Colin. His video spoke to Ms. Colin's ability to maintain hope despite all the traumas she endured. Daniel focused on a comment made in Ms. Colin's survivor testimony when she said she knew that "mommy and daddy were praying for me, and that's how I could get through." He connected her story of strength through connectivity to his own struggles with isolation during the time of COVID-19.
