Student Leadership in Action!

Harbor Day School’s student leadership team, Student Council, consists of a group of eighth grade students who work together to make school a fun and well-rounded experience for students. This year’s leadership team has many big ideas and plans. Student Council already has organized a ping pong tournament, a pumpkin decorating contest, and HDS Halloweek for the month of October. Here is a recap of the events that were recently held:

Ping Pong Teams:
Student Council has organized a ping pong tournament. Student Council split up those who signed up into groups of two. These teams competed with other teams of the same grade level in order to win candy and bragging rights!

Pumpkin Decorating Contest:
To get in the Halloween spirit, Student Council also organized a pumpkin decorating contest for middle school students. The contest took place over two weeks, 10/20 to 10/27. Student Council gave each homeroom and advisory a pumpkin to decorate. Students could bring in supplies from their homes as long as they weren’t sharp. Each advisory and homeroom themed their pumpkin on what their teacher taught. For example, Ms. Stockstill’s advisory theme was math, and Mr. Kerr’s advisory theme was English. Student Council judged the pumpkins and Mr. Pikula’s advisory and Mrs. Hahn’s class won free dress.

HDS Halloweek:
Finally, Student Council organized “HDS Halloweek,” a week filled with fun ways for students to show their Halloween spirit! HDS Halloweek took place from 10/25 to 10/29. Each day, students showed their spirit. On Monday, students wrapped teachers who volunteered in toilet paper. Tuesday, students wore Halloween colors. On Wednesday, 8th grade had free dress. Thursday was crazy hair and hat day. Finally, on Friday, 8th graders held a Bake Sale for the rest of middle school.

Harbor Day’s student leadership continues to meet weekly, working with faculty advisor Mr. Grogan to create, plan, and organize fun middle school activities. Student council is excited to bring more of these fun activities to the HDS students throughout the year.
