New Year, New Beat

By Apoorva Jha

What a way to enjoy our community connection in the new year in the magnificent Quad with the percussion duo of Street Beat! Street Beat is a high-energy explosion of urban rhythm and uplifting, inspiring music education. On January 26, their performance bought the elements of music, rhythmic and academic focus in a new fresh & engaging format.

After an enthralling opening performance, the dynamic duo of Ben and Matt educated the children about their selection of repurposed “instruments”. These comprised of everyday utilities from different walks of life: a 40-gallon rope tote bucket that imitated the sound of a bass drum, a galvanized trash can, and five-gallon office water jugs which produced mid-range sound.

They then called upon two student volunteers who had a chance of making some music with them, cheered on by the euphoric crowd! Ben continued to hold the attention of the audience by moving on to Beat Box. Those were definitely low sounds, and I knew right then that I will have to endure my kid's beatboxing in the car ride back home, and I can confirm that did indeed happen!

In the end, the duo answered some thoughtful questions from the children. It was really a joy to see our children enjoy music under the bright skies while learning about creativity and resourcefulness.
