Looking forward: Physical Education 2023-2024

By Jo Pickard, PE Teacher, and Department Chair

These past few years, it has been important for a physical education teacher to be creative and flexible in designing activities that can be done without access to traditional fields and playgrounds. By incorporating a variety of activities, students can continue to develop their physical fitness and skills in a fun and engaging way. This has been our mission for this year in physical education (PE). Now, we are looking forward to what’s coming with our new physical education facilities next school year. They include our state-of-the-art gym, synthetic turf field, and painted outdoor courts for basketball, pickleball, and volleyball. Our new gym will be exciting for students, staff, and parents.

PE is an essential part of a student's education, and the new PE facility will greatly enhance the learning experience. The new facility will bring a variety of benefits, including but not limited to:
  1. Increased access to equipment - With new facilities comes new equipment, which can provide students with more opportunities to try different activities and improve their skills.
  2. Enhanced learning environment - A modern, well-equipped PE facility can create an environment that is more conducive to learning and engagement.
  3. Flexibility - New facilities can be designed to be multi-purpose, allowing for a wider range of activities, such as sports, fitness, and dance.
  4. Increased participation - With improved facilities, students may be more likely to participate in PE classes and extracurricular activities, which can lead to improved physical fitness and overall health.
However, it's important to note that a new PE facility alone is not enough to improve the physical education experience; it's also important to have well-trained, passionate teachers who can create engaging and effective lesson plans that utilize the new facilities. Coach Joshua Parks and Coach Katie Curci are an invaluable part of our amazing PE team. We strive to provide the best physical education program with fun, cooperative, interactive, and sports-minded games that allow students to develop the whole person physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. We want our students to become better athletes, teammates, and all-around good humans. Our focus in PE is on students showing great sportsmanship, listening skills, effort, and participation at all grade levels.

We look forward to our traditional PE activities, games, Turkey Bowl, and our beloved track meet once the new facility is up and running! But also, we will keep some of our current activities and games as part of our dynamic curriculum.

Our new physical education facilities are a great investment for Harbor Day School. They will provide  increased access to equipment, enhanced learning environments, flexibility, and increased participation. With the support of our dedicated PE team and effective lesson plans, new PE facilities can help our students develop the physical skills and knowledge they need to lead healthy and active lives.
