Jazzy Ash and the Leaping Lizards

Nicole Nelson
Harbor Day School enjoyed a performance by Louisiana-style jazz band Jazzy Ash and the Leaping Lizards during an all-school assembly on Wednesday, May 9. A band including bass, banjo, percussion and saxophone accompanied the lead singer, who presented some New Orleans history for context.

Jazzy explained that Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park was where jazz was born, when people who had arrived from West African countries as slaves shared their culture, food, language, and music with each other. The group sang a Cajun French song, "Eh La Bas." Some of the tunes were more familiar, including "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing." Students danced in their seats, and teachers made a "train" conga line for a train-themed song. Everyone was hungry for some beignets by the end of the lively performance.
