Street Beats

Carol Shi
On February 27, 2019, four members of Street Beat, Ben, Lisa, Nelson, and Jada, put on an interactive show for the upper and lower school students. Street Beat is an urbanized mix of drumming and street dance. Street dance originates in hip hop, which was invented in The Bronx back in 1973. The students learned about three different elements of street dance: popping, locking, and breaking. The dancers gave some amazing demonstrations of all three. Toward the end of the program, two groups of students got to participate in a “Dance-Off” between Team Awesome and Team Amazing. (For those who are interested, it ended in a tie!) Two lucky kids even got to learn to drum on paint buckets. Through their music and dance, Street Beat helped the students learn about the history of street dance and drumming, and even taught them a few of the basic elements.
