Students Attend Chapman's Holocaust Art and Writing Project

Justin Kerr
On Friday, March 8, four Harbor Day School students attended the 20th Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Project held at Chapman University as semifinalists. Eighth graders Lily B., Elisha C., Elle O., and Ava W. were honored, along with over 50 semifinalists from schools in Orange County and around the world. The event represented countries such as South Africa, Poland, Israel, Germany, and other countries in the international competition.

Students from the entire eighth grade submitted artistic renditions depicting the challenges and horrors experienced by a particular survivor. This year’s topic was, Purposeful Telling: Through Memory to Action. Students listened to recorded copies of their survivor’s story, and created poetry, prose and artwork to represent the survivors’ Holocaust experiences.

"Being there, in a room filled with people who have seen so much horror and death, and to see them all smiling and laughing, it was inspirational and heart wrenching all at once." - Elle O.
