Spanish Field Trips!

Eighth Grade Trip to Olvera Street

Visiting Olvera Street is a welcomed tradition at Harbor Day School. This year, eighth grade Spanish students learned about the birthplace of the City of Los Angeles, also known as the El Pueblo Historic Monument. El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles, as the city was initially named, was founded in 1781 under the command of King Carlos III of Spain. As part of the one-hour guided tour, one of the historical landmarks visited was the Avila House, the oldest standing house in Los Angeles, built in 1818.

Students enjoyed a delightful lunch at El Paseo Inn Restaurant. Students savored delicious authentic Mexican cuisine and practiced their Spanish using restaurant expressions. After lunch, students took some time to see the 16’ x 80’ outdoor fresco masterpiece, America Tropical, a mural completed in 1932 by the famous artist David Siqueiros. Then, we strolled through the colorful Mexican marketplace where the students took pride in graciously using bargaining expressions while shopping.

Visiting Olvera Street not only gave students the opportunity to learn about the origins of Los Angeles, but also the experience of being immersed in the Spanish language and culture. Visiting Olvera Street is a memorable and worthwhile experience!

Sixth Grade Trip to the Alpaca Farm

On May 26, the sixth grade students were treated to a very special place, The Alpaca Hacienda. Alpacas were a cherished treasure of the ancient Inca civilization. During the presentation, students learned the differences between llamas and alpacas, where they come from, how long they live, what they do with their fleece, and do they spit (which is always a funny topic)? Students saw a shearing video that showed them the process and what that looks like. After the presentation, the fun part began when students were invited into the paddocks to pet and feed the alpacas. Alpacas are generally very shy and don’t like to be petted much, but this time they allowed students to touch their soft furry head while they eat from their hands. Students also enjoyed using alpaca fiber while taking part in the nest filler craft activity and shopping at the alpaca boutique.

Sixth graders were also very pleased with the savory dishes they had for lunch at the Guadalajara Grill restaurant. It was a wonderful and memorable experience that hopefully will become another great Harbor Day School tradition.
