To Mars with Music 2030

On Wednesday, January 25, Dr. Craig Woodson presented an assembly to kindergarten through sixth grade students: “To Mars with Music 2030.” He explained that he had been contacted by NASA back in 2000 about collaborating with them on a project to research making music on Mars, in anticipation of the scheduled 2030 Mars mission. He showed a portion of a video from that collaboration, Windows on Mars.

Dr. Woodson explained that travel to Mars would take six months, and that the thin atmosphere there would not carry sound like the Earth’s atmosphere does. He demonstrated clapping and drumming techniques that can be used without any instruments, and then introduced simple creations like half a fire extinguisher that acted like a cowbell, and a string instrument made out of Tupperware, dental floss, fishing line and a plastic tube.

A dozen students then came to the stage to help demonstrate a variety of instruments that are easy to make at home, using materials such as plastic straws, bamboo, and tiles. The grand finale was a performance that included them all in a “Martian Orchestra.”
