I Have a Story to Tell

On Friday, March 10, three Harbor Day School students were honored as finalists in the artistic division for the 18th Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Project: I Have a Story to Tell. Eighth graders Hazel Koh, Jacqueline McNeill, and Kaylana Lee were honored, along with more than 50 finalists from schools in Orange County and around the world. South Africa, Mexico, Israel, Germany, and other countries were represented in the international competition.

The HDS finalists were chosen from the entire eighth grade, which submitted graphic novel style artistic renditions depicting the challenges and horrors experienced by a particular survivor. Students listened to recorded copies of their survivor’s story, and created a multi-panel artistic rendition of the survivor’s Holocaust experience. Students drew free hand and used Pixton to create their comics.

The experience was both humbling and exciting for the finalists. “The best part was meeting the survivors because they are living history and we are the last generation who will get to meet them in person,” said Kaylana Lee. “It is an honor, but kind of sad at the same time.”
