On Wednesday, January 25 actors from the Rogue Artists Ensemble presented Zen Shorts to Harbor Day kindergartners through sixth graders. Acting out stories from the children’s book by Jon. J Muth, the actors used varying puppets to inform students about the meaning of Zen.
Each of the three short sketches enacted a story, and asked children to consider, “What can I give when I have nothing to share?”; “What if I embraced the maybes?”; and “What might be weighing me down that I can let go?” A crowd favorite was the giant panda puppet, of the ancient Japanese Bunraku tradition, named Stillwater. He sang to students that Zen was a way to clear your mind, where answers may not matter and questions can be lessons. The show closed with a breathing exercise. Actors then demonstrated how the puppets worked and answered questions from engaged students. In characteristic Harbor Day School fashion, students gave a standing "O" to the talented puppeteers.
