Curriculum

Walking through the doors of Harbor Day School over fifteen years ago, I knew this community was where I was meant to be. As a member of the faculty as well as a Harbor Day parent, I treasure the cultivation of lasting relationships between family, faculty, and students.

As continuous learners, faculty share their knowledge with every member of Harbor Day, creating a vibrant and inclusive environment filled with inquiry, collaboration, and caring. The core curriculum spirals throughout the elementary grades, introducing and reinforcing concepts with increasing levels of rigor in mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science. Also, beginning in our kindergarten, the school focuses on developing the collaborative, critical thinking, and problem solving skills that will be crucial for life in this century.

A wide range of special subjects complements the core curriculum. The students attend classes in art, Spanish, music, technology, engineering/woodshop, and library. These specialist teachers often align their projects with the core subject areas. All lower school students participate in physical education classes daily where the coaches focus on sportsmanship, class spirit, and physical skills. Our math and reading resource teachers support any student who requires additional learning experiences in these areas.

A Harbor Day education is not just about academic success, but also about developing a strong sense of ethics and character. The character education program is fully integrated into every classroom and focuses on six pillars: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

Harbor Day is a school that nurtures, challenges, and inspires children. The tireless work of the dedicated faculty guides students on a journey of discovery while at the same time remains committed to treasuring childhood. I am proud to be a part of the fabric of this journey for our children.

In the end, the best way to understand what the Harbor Day experience will mean for your child is to visit us. Our doors are always open. We invite you to see the endless possibilities that await.

Sincerely,

Melissa Mullane
