What attracted us to this book:
- I find myself on my phone too often. If I’m on my phone, what are the implications for our children?
- I was surprised by the subtitle about “less rebellious,” and I was wondering about that. I wondered why they would be less happy because this generation has everything. What is my job as a role model to children? The title of the book, the fact that it says kids are growing up less rebellious and more tolerant.
- I wanted something to challenge my beliefs, not validate it. I wanted to know if coping mechanisms were compromised. I wondered if students were expressing a different way. Nurture v nature.
- I was interested from a contrarian aspect. I didn’t necessarily believe that today’s kids are less rebellious, more tolerant, less happy, etc.

Using data gleaned from surveys given over time to college freshmen, the author demonstrates the impact of the internet/social media on children’s happiness, anxiety, maturation, lack of sleep, suicide, depression rates, political beliefs, work lives, independence, etc. This generation of children is enjoying a longer childhood, typified of communities where parents have smaller families and cultivate a longer childhood.

- Students don’t like reading because the information isn’t current.
- We need to help our parents learn how to parent children who have access to so much technology. We should help them set limits, know how to use technology.
- As students are interacting personally less after school, we should teach how to socialize and communicate in person at school.
