Harbor Day School's program of studies follows the general curriculum recommendations of the California Association of Independent Schools and the National Association of Independent Schools.
Harbor Day School is organized into a lower and an upper school. The lower school consists of two classes at each grade level from Kindergarten through the Fourth Grade and operates under the leadership of the Lower School Director. Students meet in sections of 22 students per class for all academic subjects. The weekly academic schedule in the lower school typically includes five periods of reading, five periods of writing and grammar, five periods of mathematics, two to three periods of social studies, and two to three periods of science. In addition to this academic core, students meet with specialist teachers for enrichment subjects, such as art, music, technology, physical education, library, engineering/woodshop, and Spanish.
The upper school is composed of the Fifth through the Eighth Grades and operates under the leadership of the Upper School Director. The Fifth Grade is the final year of self-contained classroom instruction. Beginning in the sixth grade, the upper school program is fully departmentalized with class sections ranging in size from eight to 16 students.
