Judith Helton, a performer with Segerstrom Center’s Arts Teach Program, entertained the 3rd-5th grade students in a dynamic musical and theatrical program on January 23, 2019. Ms. Helton played the role of Lotta Crabtree, a real life actress, entertainer and comedian from the Gold Rush Era. Through the use of instruments such as spoons, a washboard and banjo Ms. Helton took us back in time telling the story of Ms. Crabtree’s life. Ms. Helton’s performance was a delightful take on this American performer. She engaged the students throughout the show through clapping and singing. A few students were lucky enough to play an instrument in the 49er’s Band! Through her musical story telling Ms. Helton wove the tale of Lotta Crabtree’s life and taught us all a little bit more about this important period in American history.
