Puppets and Players
Did you know you can make a simple puppet with rods and a rag doll?
Did you know the first puppets were made in India and came over to Europe with the spice trade?
Did you know that marionette puppets have strings and a wooden hand hold to help you dance the puppet?
The Puppets & Players Little Theater (part of the Segerstrom Family Arts Program) came to visit HDS K-5 students this past September 27 in an outdoor assembly on the field. The puppeteer amazed our students and educated them in the art of marionettes, as she danced and paraded puppets from around the world. Students learned all sorts of facts about puppets and experienced how different cultures have interpreted puppets. As part of the show, students also learned that the Wizard of Oz was first a series of books before it was musical. Author Frank L. Baum wrote twelve books as part of the series. Stories include the Lost Princess of Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, The Magic of Oz among others.
Following all the fun of learning about puppets and the Wizard of Oz, students enjoyed a musical puppet theater presentation of the Wizard of Oz. The scenery was beautifully crafted, and the music and dancing puppets carried the imagination of students from kindergarten to fifth grade into the magical kingdom of Oz. The show was a delight for all.
