Let's Welcome New Director of Lower School - Melissa Mullane

Dear Harbor Day Community,

Harbor Day School is thrilled to announce the appointment of Melissa Mullane as our next Lower School Director, beginning July 1, 2018. She will succeed Kristin Rowe, who will retire at the end of this academic year, marking 37 years of service to Harbor Day.
Mrs. Mullane currently serves as our school Learning Specialist and previously as a fourth and fifth grade teacher since 2001. Before coming to Harbor Day, Mrs. Mullane worked at the Nightingale-Bamford School in New York City as a fourth grade teacher.

Mrs. Mullane holds an M.A. in Elementary Education from San Francisco State University in addition to two California Teaching Credentials (reading specialist and multiple subject), a B.A. in Political Science, from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a certificate in Educational Therapy.

Over the years, Mrs. Mullane has honed her skills instructing students in small groups and one-on-one supporting their specific learning needs. She works with the faculty to facilitate and organize support services for lower school students. She has taken on multiple roles within her current position to be a lead advisor for sixth and now seventh grades and is the editor of the Harbor Lights literary magazine that is published annually. She also sits on the kindergarten admission team who assess and evaluate prospective students.

Comprised of 8 members, including department chairs, the division directors, and myself, the Lower School Director Search Committee worked with the firm Carney Sandoe & Associates for this nation-wide search. We received close to 40 resumes, holding 9 preliminary interviews and concluded with 4 in-person interviews. These campus visits were two-day interviews with faculty, staff, administration, and students, along with parent and board representatives. We are so pleased that Melissa has accepted the position.

Mrs. Mullane has a deep appreciation for the Harbor Day mission and love for the school. Over the next few months, Mrs. Mullane will be working closely with Mrs. Rowe to ensure a smooth transition. Please join us in congratulating Melissa on her new role at Harbor Day.

Sincerely,

Angi Evans
Head of School
