Service Learning

Service learning is an integral part of the Harbor Day education as it builds strong character and social responsibility in our students. Eighth grade students are required to complete 15 hours of community service in an outside organization.

Students learn that they have the power to make a difference by getting involved with a cause they are passionate about and learn the importance of doing things for others. Younger students often develop community service projects of their own.
Recent examples include the Cleats For Kids project where two Harbor Day students gathered gently used soccer cleats so kids from other schools could wear them in the Daily Pilot Cup Soccer Tournament, and a bake sale where the funds went to our former interim school nurse to use for disease awareness during her time in the Peace Corps.

Harbor Day encourages service learning as it is a hands-on method to gain awareness about the world we live in and how to make it a better place. Harbor Day’s Parent Council continues to embrace service learning through the Harbor Day Serves committee. This program helps expand service learning beyond Harbor Day fostering a sense of community.
Students have volunteered at the following organizations:
  • Casa Teresa
  • Heritage House
  • Human Options
  • Second Harvest Food Bank
  • The Caring Kitchen
  • The Environmental Nature Center
  • The Oasis Center
    • WE students meeting Maasai Warriors

Twenty-six student leaders are planning a game night to raise money for the OC Food Bank, and a sports tournament to raise money for health in Africa. Their projects are completely student-driven and reflect their concerns, passions, and talents.
